Homemade Mascara from Toxic-Free by Robin KonieImage Credit: Robin Konie

Have you ever wondered what’s in your mascara? Are you afraid it’s full of bat guano (or poo for the non-Spanish speakers)? Well, you won’t usually find that in most brands these days, but it’s still not a pleasant concoction that we’re slapping on our peepers every day.

Here are the ingredients in my favorite pink and green bottle:

Water, Beeswax, Glyeryl Sterarate, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Stearic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Methylparaben, Quaternium-15, Simethicone, Quarternium-15, Butylparaben. May Contain: CI 77492, CI77499, 77491 / Iron Oxides CI77007 / Ultramarines, Mica, CI77891 / Titanium Dioxide, CI77510 / Ferric Ferrocyanide, CI75470 / Carmine, CI77288 / Chromium Oxide Greens, CI77289 / Chromium Hydroxide Green, CI77742 / Manganese Violet. (source)

Um, eww.

Natural Alternatives

I rarely wear make up now unless I have an important event, but I still cringe every time I reach for my department store candy drawer. Even my super expensive “all-natural” mascara was a dud.

Did I mention that it was expensive?

I have been wanting to make my own for months and months but never got around to it. Now that I finally have a copy of the ebook Toxic-Free, I finally decided to tick that off my to-do list.

It. Is. Amazing.

Seriously, I can’t believe how well it worked. It only took a couple of minutes to whip up, and I even cheated. I put it in a sealable plastic bag and sanitized the brush from an almost empty container of the famous pink and green instead of ordering a new container for my trial run.

Da Da Da Da…The Results

I planned to snap some pics of myself for both the eyeliner and mascara recipes, but my eyes are swollen, red, and watery from some nasty germs that I’ve been battling. It’s not a pretty sight.

We’ll go with option #2. Here is the pic that Robin took. Let me tell you that my results were even better. The magic is in the brush ladies.

Right now, the other bottles are in the garbage, and I ordered an empty mascara container for my new sidekick. A-men.

If you’re into easy DIY projects, I’d pick up a copy for yourself. Robin has a section on  personal care and beauty products and another on household cleaners (even a borax-free laundry detergent). 70 recipes that will be ready for whenever you want to replace the less healthy option in your drawers and cabinets.

Have fun mamas. You deserve this.
