Oh my, what a run on thought this post is and not even proofread (though that seems to happen often with this blog. The perfectionism is lurking in the shadows but more quietly now.)
What a nice little Memorial Day break. We spent the time as a family, took Katie to the zoo, and I took a little blogging break. It helped me to focus on gauging where we are with our diet and the healing that accompanies it. Things are pretty darn peachy. I’m glad Dr. Natasha says to keep moving forward even if all symptoms aren’t cleared. It gave me added perspective with Katie’s summer diet. We’re concentrating mostly on grilled beef and roasted or boiled chicken with raw veggie salads (raw veggies cut and mixed with olive oil and sea salt) for meals and fruit for some snacks. She is gassy from all of the raw foods we’ve been eating and the increased fruit but is in a cleansing period so really seems to need them. I can tell because I just finished with that phase. I hadn’t eaten meat for days since I couldn’t stand the thought of it. Luckily, Katie’s still eating meat but in much smaller amounts. I could handle chicken broth (boiled with onion and garlic for the first time in individual portions for me), a couple of eggs, and copious amounts of milk so was able to maintain some level of protein and animal fat intake and not force it. Since Katie’s growth spurt finished, she isn’t eating too much and wants fruit just about all the time. She has no gastrointestinal complaints from her, um, intestinal fermentation. 🙂 I am using a pinch of digestive enzymes once per day when she eats a protein heavy meal, and I think it might be one of the contributing factors of her slowed eating. It’s a bit of a relief to know that she may be getting more nutrients from her food. We both had sore throats after first trying the enzymes three times in the first day (only a pinch each time). I stopped taking them, since I wasn’t eating meat, and changed Katie to once daily. It seems to be working great, so I’ll stick here awhile with them. We have also been juicing. Every day up until Sunday. It’s been a great way to herald in the summer – a typical time when I’m too hot to eat so carb binge -, and help Katie get those raw veggies for cleansing without having to digest them. With a couple of days in the 90’s, we’re feeling the summer here in MI already! Hmm, what else? Oh, I had a fresh, juicy ripe mango the other day. It was way too much sugar for me. I could feel the echo of sugar cravings. It was very strange. They were definitely there and strongish but like a false craving. Really weird. I’ve never had anything like that before. It’s otherwise been like slavering demons until I indulge. Yay GAPS! And yay me too! I did have one cheat and stopped at Starbucks on Sunday evening. We were both disappointed. I’m happy to say I enjoy my homemade chai better and am very glad I started making it a couple of weeks ago. Hubby and I are very happy to have a ‘sweet’ in the house. A HUGE win for me was not getting a baked good when we stopped. I don’t particularly like theirs, but I have had a lingering craving for a pastry-like confection and am willing to compromise my taste buds to have one. At the last second, I refrained and completely on my own. That.was.awesome. I’m also really enjoying where our diet is right now. I am back in a building phase and really craving meat and fat – still in pretty small amounts like an ounce of chicken, 1/4 pound of beef -. I’m able to add a couple of teaspoons of ghee into my diet on a daily basis and not feel sick from the extra animal fat. It’s been pretty yummy with peanut butter since I over browned it and it smells like dessert-worthy brown butter. I’ll be stewing some frozen peaches, honey and spices with a good amount of ghee for a nice mommy treat. Okay, a couple more things and then I really need to stop jabbering like a runaway train. Katie’s skin looks better from the detox and yeast rashes. The twice daily (most days) detox baths have been wonderful for that, and the sun may be helping too – now that our 40 days and 40 nights of rain have ended -. She has at least one apple cider vinegar bath a day. I need to start taking detox baths more than once a week. I guarantee I wouldn’t be so tired and have so many worn out days if I would. I also had a calf muscle cramp yesterday evening so will be getting Natural Calm from my chiropractor to see if helps with the strange constipation that cropped up with both of us and maybe is contributing to my cravings. We’ll only take it for a short time to help any imbalances and will be sure to take it with calcium rich foods to keep it balanced. I think that’s enough updating for now. Phew!
