Once upon a time, there was a woman for whom pregnancy was a magical time. Glowing and smiling, she enjoyed every minute of her growing belly, slept well, and never had a stretch mark.
Bahahahahahaha. :ahem: Sorry.
I don’t know those people, so we’ll talk about the rest of us.
Insomnia, heartburn, acne, mood swings, nausea, round ligament pain, cottage cheese butt, night sweats, and cravings for foods that shouldn’t come anywhere near our precious babies are just a few of the never-ending symptoms that plague women who grow tiny humans.
Natural Remedies and Pregnancy
I’m 36 years old and now in my third trimester. It’s like night and day from carrying my daughter six years ago.
This time, I reversed gestational diabetes in two weeks, am controlling a nervous system condition called vasovagal syncope that caused me to pass out and have seizures with my last pregnancy, and have moderated allergic reactions, inflammation, water retention, aches and pains, and insomnia.
The only thing that I haven’t overcome is the cravings. Oh, the cravings.
Essential oils and flower essences are by far the most powerful remedies in my toolbox right now and so amazingly easy to use.
5 Essential Oils for Pregnancy Woes
Will essential oils cure your pregnancy symptoms? Well, no. They’re not miracle workers, but mamas, I swear they feel like it.
When you match the right oils to the underlying issues, you may just weep in gratitude. The oils listed below are some of the most versatile oils you’ll use and are all safe for use during pregnancy.
You’ll notice that I make no medical claims of healing or detailed information of how essential oils affect the body therapeutically due to FDA regulations. Please feel free to do your own research, read published studies, and form your own educated opinion about how they help support your health.

1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender helps to calm the nervous system and support healthy skin. According to this study and my personal experience, it is amazing at helping the body to moderate an immune response like itchy bug bites or allergies.
Uses for Lavender –
- relaxation and sleep
- immune booster
- discomfort from allergies
- improves mood
- skin care including dry, itchy, and stretching skin
2. Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Oh frankincense, how I love thee. Let me count the ways.
Uses for Frankincense –
- pregnancy discomfort including sore and tight muscles
- immune booster
- adrenal function support (my personal experience)
- skin care including dry, itchy, and stretching skin; wonderful at reducing the appearance of scars
- uplifts the mood
3. Lemon (Citrus limon)
Lemon has been a lifesaver for me during this entire pregnancy. It’s the only scent that chased the nausea of first trimester away. It perks me up when fatigue comes knocking. It makes my liver oh-so-happy.
Uses for Lemon –
- revitalizing energy booster
- supports liver function (my personal experience)
- great for ‘morning sickness’ nausea
- mood booster
- supports the function of the parasympathetic nervous system
- supports the immune system, popular for use during virus infections
Valor is the only blend I’ll mention here. I prefer single oils over blends in most cases, so I can mix my own blends depending on our needs. The variety and quality of singles was a big reason I adding Young Living essential oils to my practice’s supplement lines.
Valor has been one of the oils that has snuck into my daily routine and has become a powerhouse at my house. My daughter uses it as her ‘brave’ oil. It helps her sleep and turns her into a completely different child when she’s in a new social situation. There’s instantly no nervousness, hanging on mom, or social anxiety once she gets a few sniffs from the bottle. It’s really miraculous.
For me, it’s my secret weapon against vasovagal syncope flares. When the inflammation and compression start to make me feel dizzy, nauseated, and affect my vision, I apply Valor to my lower back and over my tailbone, I feel 90-100% better within 10 minutes.
Miracle oil over here.
Uses for Valor –
- increases feelings of self-esteem, courage, and strength
- can relieve muscle, joint, and nerve discomfort (my experience)
- improves focus (my experience)
- balancing and grounding
5. German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
Oh pregnancy water retention and inflammation, let’s not pretend that we’re friends and make a clean break. Pretty please?
For all the times I’ve eaten dairy and wheat in the last 7 months and swelled up like a balloon, German chamomile has been my hero. If I apply it before bedtime, my rings fit in the morning, bones reappear in my feet, and my body reverts from the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man to a more reasonable size. I can actually lose 3-5 pounds of excess fluids in a single night. Craziness.
Uses for German Chamomile –
- relaxation and sleep (my secret sleep weapon)
- can relieve muscle, nerve, and joint discomfort
- promotes digestive, liver, and gall bladder health
- soothes and clears the mind
Want to Use the Oils I Use?
I have used many brands of essential oils over the years but started seriously researching them when I incorporated oils into my practice. I am also currently studying to be an aromatherapist, so I really do take my oils seriously.
I added Young Living Essential Oils to my line of supplements after a trial period based on their vast selection of single, organic oils, and because I was blown away with how effective they were compared to other (very reputable) brands I used before.
Try them and learn the difference. I’ll be happy to help you along your journey and make a believer out of you too.
