What I'm Reading Around the Web 4-14-2014

I seem to have taken a little hiatus with this series, but it’s back thanks to the productivity tips from Chris Kresser (keep reading for more info).

It’s been a super busy and productive week. Thanks to my new sleep patterns, I’m up by 6-6:30 every morning and I can get some reading in before my day gets started.

Here’s what caught my attention around the web —

Pot Roast with Apples, Sweet Potatoes, and Prunes from the Nourished Kitchen Cookbook

Dinner at my house is pretty typical of most families. It’s a smattering of takeout and quick dinners eaten in front of the TV when I’m battling fatigue. And then there are the days when I shine.

Dinner time is the one time of day we’re all together, so it should mean something.

A nourishing and delicious meal while we share our day, smiling, laughing, and making warm fuzzy family memories that I hope Katie remembers forever.

I want more of those meals.

Now that I have mostly beat adrenal fatigue, it’s time to make that happen.

Nourished Kitchen: Farm-to-Table Recipes for the Traditional Foods Lifestyle

We prefer homey, rustic meals. Food that features local, quality ingredients and doesn’t come with a lot of fuss.

When I got an advance copy of the Nourished Kitchen Cookbook last week, it immediately became a family favorite. It feels like a cookbook handed down through the generations, filled with cherished recipes that nurture families.

I was mostly handed down recipes clipped from magazines that feature brand names. Though they bring back pretty fantastic memories, they are not what I’ll be feeding my family.

This weekend, I held a flash giveaway for the wonderful new cookbook by Jennifer McGruther. It was so exciting to be able to offer you a chance at owning an advance copy of a cookbook that is fast becoming a staple in my house.

Later today, I will be publishing my favorite recipe from Nourished Kitchen: Farm-to-Table Recipes for the Traditional Foods Lifestyle. I cannot wait to share it with you.

Without further ado… :drum roll:

Sometimes, you come across a book that you know will change your future. Cookbooks have never done that for me. In all honesty, I don’t really like to cook but I’m getting there thanks to my Italian mother-in-law.

If you’ve ever had the food from northern Italy, you’ll understand. It’s simple, rustic and yet somehow elegant, and celebrates the flavor of the food.

Two days ago, a review copy of the brand new cookbook ‘The Nourished Kitchen’ winged its way to my door. If you’re a foodie, you’ll understand why I was crazy excited to open it.

The first thing you’ll notice is that Jenny is a really accomplished photographer. If you follow The Nourished Kitchen blog, you’ll know why I’m in love with her style.

The delicate blush of cherry blossoms, glowing fields of grain, and food that will make you salivate. You’ll feel nourished just looking at the pages. No lie.

The recipes are simple, elegantly rustic, and celebrate the flavor of seasonal and local foods just like Mamma’s.

These are the type of recipes that give me a sense of satisfaction when I serve them and make me enjoy being in the kitchen. I promise you, that’s not an easy task.

Because they’re simple, many of the recipes are easily adapted to restricted diets. That’s important when your family and every client in your practice has a unique set of dietary needs.

Being able to show clients how to cook simple meals with layers of flavor will be a game changer for me.

Improve Sleep - and endocrine function - with These Essential Oils

I’m one of those fancy schmancy people who loves the symphony. All of the instruments playing together making beautiful music. Can you imagine if there was a rogue cellist who started playing We Will Rock You in the middle of a Mozart concerto?

Other members of the orchestra would eventually fall out of time and the piece would fall apart.

What on Earth does this have to do with sleeping? Let me tell you…

The Delicate Endocrine System

The endocrine system is like an orchestra. The instruments are delicate (thyroid, adrenals, ovaries/testes, pineal gland, hypothalamus, etc.), and they work together to play in concert.

If you adrenal glands are underperforming, they draw on the thyroid gland. If your hypothalamus is off, the messages (hormones) don’t get relayed between the other glands and systems.

Endocrine imbalances can result in everything from belly fat to PMS and insomnia.

Resetting the endocrine system is a big job. I start the healing process with diet, digestion, blood sugar handling, and SLEEP for most clients.
